McGinley rules out RC vice-captain gig in '16

Paul McGinley said Wednesday that he won’t take a vice-captaincy role under Darren Clarke – or perhaps anyone else, for that matter.

“At this stage I don’t really have the personality like Sam Torrance or Jose Maria Olazabal to come back as a vice captain,” McGinley told reporters during the Ryder Cup news conference. “I’m pretty sure I won’t be one at all but of course I’ll be supporting them.”

Following Europe’s romp at Gleneagles, many players said that the McGinley captaincy was the best they’d ever experienced. The Northern Irishman was part of the five-man selection committee that named Clarke as the 2016 captain, along with past leaders Colin Montgomerie and Olazabal, and European Tour CEO George O’Grady and respected tour member David Howell.

McGinley played on three winning Ryder Cup teams (2002, 2004, 2006) and twice served as an assistant (2010 and ’12) before assuming the captaincy.
