Garcia leads McIlroy by 3 at Firestone

After a 61 on Friday, Sergio Garcia didn’t slow down on Saturday at Firestone. The world No. 5 shot a 3-under 67 for a three-shot lead heading into the final round. But a familiar name is not far behind.

Leaderboard: Sergio Garcia (-14), Rory McIlroy (-11), Marc Leishman (-9), Adam Scott (-8), Justin Rose (-8), Keegan Bradley (-8)

What it means: Garcia has yet to win a major or a WGC event, but the Spaniard has a great chance to end one of those streaks Sunday. He won in Qatar earlier this year, and tied for second at the Travelers and the Open Championship. If he can win his first WGC title, it would be a tremendous boost heading into next week’s PGA Championship. McIlroy, who held off Garcia and Rickie Fowler to win the claret jug at Liverpool two weeks ago, will also be looking to add his first WGC title to the trophy case before trying to win his second Wanamaker trophy at Valhalla.

Round of the day: Adam Scott continued to prove why he’s No. 1 in the world. The 2011 champion at Firestone birdied two of the last three holes for a 5-under 65, and he’s T-4 heading into the final round. Since his win at Colonial, Scott has finished in the top 10 at the Memorial, U.S. Open and Open Championship.

Best of the rest: World No. 15 Hideki Matsuyama matched Scott for the low round of the day with a 65. But it was McIlroy who made the most noise at the end of play on Saturday with birdies on his final two holes for a 66 to cut Garcia’s lead to three.

Biggest disappointment: Fowler was in the mix starting the third round, but he couldn’t get anything going before finishing with a double bogey for a 2-over 72.

Main storyline heading into Sunday: After nearly chasing down McIlroy at the Open, Garcia will be looking over his shoulder Sunday as he tries to hold off the three-time major champion. It will also be interesting to see if one of the other big names in contention can go low early and post a number for the final group to look at.
